By Shelby Moquin [email protected] The Grand Canyon is known for its beautiful cliffs and peeks, and stunning views. Captivating tourists and visitors all alike. All six point four million of them. But the views might just be a little too stunning. Just this week two deaths have been reported at the Grand Canyon, both in separate incidents. Just around twelve people each year die at the Grand Canyon National Park, from a multitude of causes. Such as heart attacks, drowning, suicide, and car crashes. Approximately just around two to three people die from falling over cliffs, bluffs, and the rim of the Canyon. According the mygrandcanyonpark.com, chances of death are “1 in 400,000 visitors”. On Thursday, a tourist part of a tour group from Hong Kong, fell from one the Canyons most stunning points, Eagle Point. Officials say he was attempting to take a picture when he stumbled over the edge. Eagle point is known for its horseshoe-shaped glass skywalk which allows visitors to have the appearance that they are floating over the Canyon itself. But some points have no barrier or protection against tourists and the staggering fall. Signs are displayed at Eagle Point warning tourists not to get too close to the edge. The drop is approximately one-thousand feet. After the man fell, a helicopter was sent to retrieve his body. His name has not yet been released. Earlier in the week on Tuesday, just east of Eagle point is where another body of a foreign individual has been found. In Grand Canyon Village, a wooded part of the park, is where the body was found. The cause of death of the individual was unclear and the investigation is still ongoing. In 2017, a man from Ankeny, Iowa died at the Grand Canyon. He, again, was attempting to take a photo when he fell from the rim of the Canyon. Despite the deaths this week, don’t let that scare you. The Grand Canyon offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as camping, swimming, hiking, and of course; the stunning views from the rim of the Canyon. Eagle Point pictured above.

How many high schoolers actually understand that simple sentence? Not very many. Many high schoolers feel obligated to take a foreign language in high school, mainly because most colleges require it, but also because all of their peers are taking it. It seems like an easy task. Every kid walks into their Spanish or German class thinking that it can’t be that hard or that they only have to do this so they can get into the college they want to succeed in. “I am in my third year of Spanish and you would think at this point we would all know a decent amount of Spanish. Enough to where when the teacher says a sentence we can easily understand it and respond back. Unfortunately, I and many others aren’t to that point and getting there seems impossible,” states junior Ellie Waterbury. So what if there was an option to enroll your kids into a foreign language class right in their elementary schools? According to Suzanne Robin’s article, “Why Is It Easier for a Child to Learn a New Language Than an Adult?” younger kids learn other languages easier than older kids. Young children are literally made to absorb all the information they can without even realizing it. So if they are exposed to that language all throughout elementary school it could increase how many people would be able to speak it fluently by college. “I think that having foreign language as an option in elementary school would be very helpful; I think it would make it way easier to take Spanish in high school. I mean it’s almost as if I’m wasting my time. I definitely don't know how to speak it, so what's the point of it being a requirement to get into college?” says sophomore Jaelynn Ernst. Almost every child in elementary school is proud of who they are. They speak and say what they want even if it doesn’t make sense. This is another reason why it would be good to start teaching them a foreign language because they will practice it more out loud and not be afraid of how they sound and if it’s wrong. That’s is one issue a lot of high schoolers can relate to. If a fluent Spanish or German speaker walked into the classroom and asked all the kids a question how many of them would actually answer due to the pure fear of saying it wrong? As the child development teacher at CCA, Mrs. Hayes, states, ”I think that's a great idea! I believe research shows that children learn a 2nd language much faster than adults do and the best time to start is around the age of 10. I personally, would love to see the introduction of a second language in the elementaries and I think research would prove there are many advantages to doing so.” Making it an option could benefit many, many kids in the long run. It would also make communication more fun because most people would know at least two languages. “I think it’s a great idea, I would be all for it. I mean the younger the kids the more they seem to remember. The thing is the schools will have to be able to afford it and hire someone to do it, but the kids would learn the days of the week, numbers, months, just the basic so by the time they get to Spanish 1 they will have an understanding of what it is like and it is amazing how much they remember,” states CCA Spanish teacher, Ms. Meister. It was expected that Trump would be reaching out to his Democratic colleagues. Officials in his administration shared that he was going to make an effort to build bridges between the parties. Near the beginning of his speech he stated, "Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country. 2. Trump announced another summit with North Korea Trump stated that he would be once again meeting with Kim Jong Un in Vietnam. He gave himself a pat on the back by claiming that if it weren't for his 2016 election, we would be in a "major war" with North Korea right now. 3. Democratic women showed up Democratic women wore all white in honor of the suffragette movement. Trump made a nod to women's progress by noting that women "have filled 58 percent of the newly created jobs in the last year." This prompted many congresswomen to stand and cheer. Trump said, "We also have more women serving in Congress than at any time before." This, of course, is because of Democratic women. The number of Republican women in Congress went down after the 2018 election. The irony of the women elected being a force rallied against him seemed to be lost on Trump. But one major change is that for the first time in thirty years, The Oscars will go on without a host. Kevin Hart was originally set to host The Oscars, then recently, some homophobic comments resurfaced which lead him to step down from hosting. The media gobbled up the story and people on Twitter aren't shy about criticizing Hart and his actions. Hart voluntarily stepped down from The Oscars saying, “Our world is becoming beyond crazy and I'm not gonna let the craziness frustrate me … if you don't believe people change, grow, evolve as they get older, [then] I don't know what to tell you.” He even made an appearance on The Ellen Show, which received some backlash because Degeneres did forgive him for his comments and asked him to rethink his decision about hosting. The last time The Oscars went on without a host was intentional, and it was purposely set up by the producers to feature more big-time celebrity presenters. Instead of one leading host. Presenters at this year Oscars include Whoopi Goldberg, Tessa Thompson, Awkwafina, Constance Wu, and Jennifer Lopez. There were some big upsets in the nominations department as well. Films Roma and The Favourite both walked away with ten nominations. But people were upset by the fact that Bradley Cooper was snubbed of a directors nomination, although A Star is Born was nominated in eight other categories. Another surprise was that Emily Blunt was left out of the Best Actress nominees. While Marina de Tavira made the list for her role in Roma. And movies like Black Panther made history as the first ever comic book based movie to be nominated for an Oscar. The Oscars will air at 7:00 pm (central time) on February 24th on ABC Network. Be sure to tune in to see if your favorite movie/actor/actress takes home the win! Image via Radio Times
By Amelia Keller Netflix's original movie Bird Box set a record when it garnered 45 million views in its first week of release. The storyline is centered around "entities" that cause victims to commit suicide against their will. To avoid this fate, characters in the movie go to extreme lengths to avoid seeing them. They close all doors, pull all blinds, paper over their windows, and even paint the windshields in their car. Most notably, they wear blindfolds whenever they leave their home.
This smash hit has spawned an Internet phenomenon called the "Bird Box Challenge" in which people attempt to go about their daily tasks with blindfolds on. This can be dangerous for obvious reasons such as crossing the street, cooking, and even just falling while walking around. People seem to know no bounds when looking for views, however. One video by Morgan Adams on YouTube gained over 2 million views in just one day. Netflix tweeted asking Bird Box fanatics to be careful in their challenges, but did not tell viewers to stop. By Shelby Moquin [email protected] Christmas, a beloved holiday around the world, and one at the White House as well. Every year the White House is decorated in colorful lights and spruced up with trees. The Trump family is celebrating their second Christmas in the White House, and just like families all across the world, the decorating season is underway. The recently revealed theme is called American Treasures. The theme is all about American patriotism, celebrating America and all the things and people that make America great. “This is a joyous time of year when we decorate the White House for the Christmas Season. Our theme honors the heart and spirit of the American people. Thank you to the many volunteers and staff who worked hard to decorate the halls of the People’s House in Christmas cheer. On behalf of my family, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” Melania Trump, First Lady of the United States, via whitehouse.gov. The Gold Star tree in the east wing honors those who have served along with their families. It is decorated with golden ribbons and bulbs, and visitors are encouraged to write notes to ones who are serving and place them on the tree. Skylines of cities and monuments around the country can be found on a mantelpiece placed in the East Room, along with seventy-two handmade paper ornaments on a fir tree. In the Grand Foyer is twenty-nine trees, covered in over fourteen-thousand gleaming red ornaments. Melania Trump has also received some backlash on the red trees lining the east hallway in the White House, it sparked a large amount of jokes, memes, and comments about the trees. Some people compared the trees to the sea of blood in The Shining, or the cloaks that women wear in the television dystopian-drama The Handmaid's Tale. Melania responded at an event with, “We are in (the) 21st Century and everybody has a different taste,'' she said. "I think they look fantastic. I hope everybody will come over and visit it. In real life, they look even more beautiful.” Regardless of your Christmas decor, The Anchor Staff wishes you a very Merry Christmas! By Shelby Moquin [email protected] Image via @FLOTUS from Twitter
By Shelby Moquin [email protected] Holiday Retail has grown immensely in the past couple of years, a large amount of coming from the online market. People have stopped going to stores to by gifts and instead are ordering them online. In 2017 the Holiday Retail sales was $680.4 Billion (U.S Currency). The number is projected to be larger for 2018. (Image via BusinessInsider) The holidays are nipping at our heels, and the shopping market is expected to explode. According to Everyday Money, an online news outlet, says this Christmas will be the hottest toy season yet. Predicted toys for the younger ones, Hatchimals and the Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle board game and expected to be big sellers. In the tech department, the new Google Pixel and Apple watches are already big sellers and are expecting to grow. And for adults, Google Home’s, Amazon Prime’s Alexa devices, and Kindle Fires. Online retailers are expected to make a 31% increase in sales from last year. eBay, Amazon, and even brand-name stores such as Target and Walmart are also seeing improvements. With these said improvements, most stores are expanding online to widen sales and customer outreach. Local economies are also suffering from the online market. Smaller stores with no online platform are losing sales because people are not wanting to travel from the safety of their homes into the stores. Instead consumers are turning to online realtors to get all their gifts. Amazon even allows you to send gifts to other people's houses. The Black Friday deals are already beginning too. Target and Walmart are taking the market by storm by including deals that discount electronics and kids toys. Leading customers to stock up on presents and gifts earlier than usual. Happy Holiday Season from The Anchor staff! |
