By Shelby Moquin Greta Thunberg has been making headlines at just 16 years old. The revolutionary environmental activist teenager has just been awarded Time’s Person of the Year award.
The news came on December 10th and was announced on NBC’s Today Show. This makes Thunberg the youngest person to ever be awarded Time’s Person of the Year award. Thunberg rose to the spotlight by protesting the use of carbon emissions in Sweden, her home country, and refusing to go to school until the government would do something about it. Her recent expeditions include traveling all over the globe speaking to cities and crowds about the irreversible damage of climate change, including even here in Iowa City. Her methods of transportation include sailing on the zero-emission boat across the Atlantic. Many have commented about the decision to award Thunberg this title, including President Donald Trump. Ironically, Trump was a runner up for the award. Other runner ups for the award include Nancy Pelosi, Hong Kong protesters, and the whistleblower for the Trump-Ukraine Scandal. Thunberg said in a recent post on Instagram about receiving the award, “Wow, this is unbelievable! I share this great honor with everyone in the #FridaysForFuture movement and climate change activists everywhere.” My View: Personally, it was great to see someone my age making such an impact on the world. Greta is only 16 and already on the front page of Time Magazine. Which is a huge award for her and recognition, but also motivation for all youth across the globe. Greta Thunberg is proof that if you put your mind to something change can happen. Greta Thunberg speaking to a local crowd in Iowa City, shown below. By Ladamus Henderson “What's the 27 Club? Jared Anthony Higgins, otherwise known as “Juice Wrld,” was a genre-bending rapper who emerged from SoundCloud in recent years. Juice Wrld’s catchy, sweet voiced hit songs, were often freestyled in a couple of takes, which landed his hit songs “Lucid Dreams” and “All girls are the Same,” top spots on the Billboard 100, after this Interscope Record signed him at age 19. His rise to fame grew quickly with the promised success of “Lucid Dreams” a distressed, mellow lullaby, centered around a guitar sample from Stings 1993 hit “Shape of My Heart.” This simply sanctified Juice Wrld as one of the few SoundCloud Rappers to breakthrough to the pop mainstream. Juice Wrld often touched on sensitive topics in his music, such as mental health, heartbreak, mortality, and many other deepened themes in his music. His death occurred a little after 1 a.m. on Sunday after law enforcement received information that guns and drugs were possible on the plane. Officials stated that when the plane landed at the Atlantic Aviation hangar at Midway airport, a search was conducted and roughly 70 pounds of marijuana in vacuum sealed bags, six bottles of liquid prescription codeine cough syrup, and three firearms, accompanied by metal piercing bullets and high capacity magazines were seized During a brief search the rapper began compulsing, after taking several percocets in attempt to hide them. Federal Agents quickly issued Narcan, a drug used to revive people who are perceived of overdosing on opiods. The Chicago Fire Department was on the scene in less than seven minutes and paramedics spent relatively 40 minutes treating Higgins, mostly regulating his heartbeat. They eventually transported the Higgins to a hospital in a hangar operated by Atlantic Aviation at Midway. They arrived at 3:06 a.m. and doctors ultimately pronounced Higgins dead. He was 21. Posthumously many of his collaborators, fans, close friends, and a number of celebrities mourned his death. His label called him “a gentle soul whose creativity knew no bounds.” Others responded by streaming the rapper's music, with audio streams soaring 487 percent the day of his death, and streams reaching 38.2 million times in the US alone, nearly 24 million more than any other artists. You’re able to see yourself laying in your bed seeing shadows around. That’s what people with sleep paralysis experience at night. Sleep paralysis is a very common occurrence with 4 out of every 10 people experiencing it at least once in their lifetime according to WebMD.
Sleep paralysis occurs in the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage of sleep which is about 90 minutes after you initially fall asleep. It occurs most often into mainly teenagers but can happen to people of all ages. Freshman Tiffanie Tonelli says, “ It’s a very frightening experience when it happens for the first time but it becomes less scary over time,.” wWhen asked about her experience with the phenomenon. People have even made jokes about it online, even giving names to their sSleep paralysis “demons” which are just the shadows that roam around your room. For me personally, I used to have sleep paralysis very frequently as a child but it’s ceased to only about once a month now. If you ever get sleep paralysis, don’t worry, you can . To break the spell you can try wiggling a toe or even thinking happy thoughts. By Amelia Keller "The Man" by Taylor Swift is a song off of her seventh studio album, Lover. It's a discussion of the double standard placed on men and women, with specific examples from her life as a person in the public eye. We're in the third wave of feminism and Swift is longing to be viewed the same as her male counterparts. She alludes to the most used Taylor Swift joke out there- that she's had too many boyfriends.
Swift sings, "Every conquest I made would make me more of a boss to you," referring to the way celebrity men are often not only accepted for dating around, but encouraged to do so. Swift's audience consists largely of young women, but those young women are starting to grow up. The girls who were 15 when her debut album was released are now 28. They're experiencing adult issues, and she is obviously nodding to them and their struggles. Less apparently, she is speaking to the media and people who aren't fans of hers who may have looked down on her and thrown these insults in the past. Swift is now nearly 30 and is standing up for herself effectively and with a maturity that reflects all she's learned over the last 14 years. By Shelby Moquin Fall is upon us folks! Our phones emit a blue light which can disrupt our circadian rhythm and make it hard for us to sleep at night as stated by the National Sleep Foundation. A circadian rhythm could be described as an internal clock. It’s what regulates when we feel tired or awake in a 254-hour period. Our eyes are used to receiving this light from the sun throughout the day but now with phones, we see that light practically every minute of our lives. To fix this problem, many phones have a “dark mode” which reduces the strain of the screen on your eyes. Even though the problem of blue light has found a solution there’s still some that need one. Text Neck is a term used to describe when we bend our heads down to look at our phones which cause an increase of weight on our necks of about 60 pounds. This leads to upper back and neck pain according to Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, a New York spinal surgeon. Just recently, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) has found that increased phone use leads to having more rare types of cancers and tumors. For the study, rodents were exposed to electromagnetic waves since they were in the womb to see what kind of effect it would have on their life. The study also found that males have an increased chance of getting these cancers and tumors. Our phones may cause cancer, but there’s still something more immediate you should be worried about. Bacteria! Phones are so dirty they have up to 10 times the amount of germs as a toilet seat according to a microbiologist from the University of Arizona, Charles Gerba. The problem is that we're always swapping our phones with people to show them something and this is what leads to the transmission of different bacteria to other people's phones. The solution has a very simple fix. Clean your phone more often. There are wipes to help you clean your phone and you can even just dilute some isopropyl alcohol and spray down your phone. My cowriters and I are embarking on a journey of a phone-free life so check back in our October edition for an update. By Ellie Hagen Flu Season in Schools
It’s that time of year again, where everyone in school is beginning to get sick. You may notice your friends sneezing, coughing, and suffering scratchy throats. Of course, you wouldn’t want to get sick and fall behind in school, so here are some helpful ways to stay healthy this year! Keep those hands clean!!! It may seem like a saying that is overused, but washing your hands really is as important as everyone says! In schools, everyone is so close together that bacteria spreads very quickly, and you’re spending all day touching germy surfaces, especially since Healthine says that you can spread the flu to someone SIX feet away from you! You should wash your hands before you eat, after using a tissue, and, obviously, after you use the restroom. You should also never share personal items like lip balm, water bottles, or pretty much anything that spreads another person’s germs directly to you. Eat well and drink water Even though you may not want to, eating plenty of fruits and veggies is great for your immune system. Not only will it help you keep from getting sick, it will also give you more energy and help you feel better. Drinking water is also very important for you in many ways. Like the fruits and veggies, drinking water will help your immune system immensely, and keep your body healthy. Get your flu shot The best way to prevent the flu is to get the vaccine for it. Stop in at Walgreens or look to see when a CCA school near you is doing free flu shots, and get one! You may feel a little sick after getting one, but it will help keep you healthy throughout the winter! |
