By: Shelby Moquin [email protected] Just as 2019 begins, Thailand is being ravished by another devastating storm. The storm is impacting Thailand’s most popular tourist islands, leaving hundreds stranded. The tourist attracting islands are also some of the most remote ones, making emergency services worried and anxious on how they will reach them if they are in serious danger. Airplanes going in and out of Thailand have been delayed as well as boats and ferries, leaving some tourists stranded during the storm. The storm, named Pabuk, brought on torrential rainfall, depending on the area, there was as much as twelve inches. Devastating winds also knocked over power lines, trees, and caused severe damage to local business and houses. Rough waves and seas were also expected along the more coastal parts and islands. The last time a storm of this magnitude hit Thailand was 1997. People were warned days ahead of the storms suspected landfall to get to higher ground and stay away from water. Three people have been killed because of Pabuk. One man was killed when his boat capsized while fishing, and one elderly couple drowned according to Thai authorities. The Royal Thai Navy has deployed two ships to help with search and rescue. Damage from the storm is still being assessed, but Thai officials expect there to be more than millions of dollars in damage. Volunteers in Thailand are cleaning up the beaches that have been ravaged by the storm, and others are donating anything that they can spare to shelters and groups distributing supplies.
