He transferred from Washington High School where he taught for 14 years. “I'm not used to kids wearing hats, not used to backpacks in the classroom, still managing to walk around the classroom without tripping. Technology wise I'm not use to Chromebooks and MacBooks, and certainly not used to not having a smartboard,” Weiland relayed. “Really getting used to writing and having to erase it afterwards, Schoology I'm really used too surprisingly.” Weiland stated when asked the hardest thing about transferring over, “The hardest thing about me is that I taught at Washington for 14 years so I was the veteran teacher over there and I knew all the teachers and students. Being at Washington for so long is the football players at Washington asked me to wear their jerseys because I inspired them. I watched siblings go by. I think the hardest thing for me is that I don't know everything here and that'll come with patience. It’ll take some time and some growth.” Favorite Movie Interstellar If you could best friends with any celebrity who would it be Paul McCartney that way I would I know what it feels like to rock. By Amelia Keller The grass is green, the grills are hot, and the beach is crowded. After eastern Iowa's long winter, summer is finally taking over. Well- almost.
With summer comes the endless days of picnics in the sand, boating, tubing, and swimming. For many years, a favorite spot for area friends and family was the lake at Kent Park. Then two years ago it was drained. The 27 acre lake was drained due to high levels of bacteria and too many algae blooms. A budget of almost $3 million was set aside for the lake restoration project. And it's paid off! Just in time for summer break, the lake has reopened! Iowa families can once again enjoy the state park in all its former glory. With the restoration project complete and a prevention plan in place for the future, many generations to come will be enjoying the beauty of our very own state park right down the road. By Audrey Bunten “It's kind of fun to do the impossible” Walt Disney once said, and that is exactly what directors and producers of Disney live-action films are doing. They are able to make the impossible possible. Some of the more popular adaptations are: Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, The Jungle Book, and Dumbo.
There’s a lot of work that goes into directing one of these live-action films, and it’s a lot of pressure on the directors because they know that the new movie needs to live up to the original. The directors and everyone on the team need to be creative to think of the best options for making the live-action movie represent the original the best they can. One of the highest rated Disney live-action movies is Beauty and the Beast. This movie involved many different techniques to help it represent the original film. For example, Dan Stevens, who plays the Beast, had to wear a full body suit with many sensors on it to show his movements. The editors and animators then had to work in the studio in order to make him look like the Beast and made sure every little movement was captured with the suit, according to Brian Truitt from USA Today. Another popular Disney live-action movie is Cinderella. This one didn’t require quite as much work as Beauty and the Beast did but some scenes did need more technological help than others. For example, the famous scene of Cinderella’s ball gown transformation needed animators to help add the glitter and sparkles float around Cinderella to make it look more magical. One of the hardest Disney live-action movies that has been made so far is The Jungle Book. This movie was very challenging to make because the animators need to make the animals talk. They had actors to play the speaking part, but the hard part was getting the animals to look like they are talking while still looking realistic. Making one lifelike animal talk is one thing, but having practically the whole cast as animals is something totally different. One of the scenes of Mowgli in the river was actually filmed in a large pool. This took lots of editing to realistically turn the pool into a jungle setting. Disney movies are advancing more and more. With more new technology, the directors are able to have the movie represent the original even better. There are still plenty of Disney live-action movies coming in the near future. Make sure to watch out for movies such as The Lion King, Mulan, Aladdin, Pinocchio, and even Lady and the Tramp. By Laurel Preston James Charles, a Youtuber who has been in the news lately for being accused to have been a bad friend and more seriously was accused of influencing straight men into doing sexual favors for him. If you have never heard of him or just don’t know what the tea is, let me fill you in. Coachella weekend two was not as hectic as weekend one but it was still crazy, especially for celebrities just trying to enjoy the music. James Charles attended weekend two in the hopes to have fun with his friends but it quickly turned dangerous for him as fans swarmed him in V.I.P. So he turned to the company Sugar Bear Hair to get Artist passes for him and his friends so he could have a safe experience. In return for these passes he signed a contract that meant he had to plug the company on his Instagram stories and it had to stay up for twenty-four hours, but he was not getting paid for this. Skip forward to the week after Coachella weekend two, Charles posts the Instagram story plugging Sugar Bear Hair, and before hand texts his close friend Tati that he was going to do this, giving her a warning because Tati’s brand Halo Beauty is a close competitor to Sugar Bear Hair. A few hours after James’ story goes up Tati goes on Instagram crying about how fake people are in the industry and how she is sick of it. This clearly pointing the finger at James. After that James tries to contact Tati multiple times, trying to get in touch and talk but she never replies. Later that week she would post her iconic video on Youtube called “By Sister”. The video aimed at James because he calls his fan base the Sisters. In the video she calls out James for being a bad friend and she says that before the Instagram post went up of James supporting Sugar Bear Hair she got no text, it was only until after that she says she got a text from James informing her of the post. Another thing she said in her video was that James had tried to convert straight men into being gay, and said that at one of her birthday dinners he explained in detail what he wanted to do sexually to an attractive waiter. Tati says when she told James the waiter was straight, James replied “Doesn’t matter, I’m a celebrity.” Now a few days after Tati made her video James made a video of his own called “Tati” saying he is sorry for all he did. But some people were quick to point out that the apology sounded disingenuous and the video quickly became one of the most disliked videos on Youtube. About a week after that Charles tried again but he tried a new approach. He posted another video called “No More Lies”. Saying he was done with all the lies being told about him and he wanted to set the record straight. In the video he called out Tati, saying that he did text her multiple times before and after the Sugar Bear Hair Instagram story went up and continued to get in contact with her but she would never reply. And what about the waiter you might ask? It was all consensual. James says that the “I’m a celebrity” comment was taken out of context, and it was an inside joke that was shared with him and his friends, Tati being one of them. Tati also accused James of trying to force the waiter into doing things he didn’t want to do but in James’ video he shows his DMs on instagram that show that the waiter was Bisexual and everything he did with James was given consent. The waiter was even the one who DM’d James first. Now during all of this James had lost about three million subscribers on Youtube while Tati gained five million, but once James came out with “No More Lies” he started to gain back the subscribers that he lost. Now many have tried to weigh in on this topic but there are always two sides of a story and all parties who were involved in this debacle have vowed to take a break from social media, for some well needed vacation time. By Amelia Keller Kraft is offering moms a chance to have a night off. The company that is well known by mothers and children alike for their macaroni and cheese wants to pay babysitting fees for the people with the hardest job in the world.
Kraft has allotted $50,000 to pay for childcare on Sunday, May 12. Each mother is eligible for up to $100. They say it's a chance for, "No meltdowns, no diaper changes and no going to the bathroom with kids pounding on the door." Sergio Eleuterio, head of marketing, says they're giving mothers what they actually want: "Some time for themselves." Mothers who are looking to take advantage of Kraft's Mother's Day Away offer can visit their site and upload a photo of their receipt or invoice from the babysitting service. Mothers are asked to also provide a short reasoning of why they needed a night off. By Laurel Preston The biggest V.I.P. party with everyone who is anyone happened this Monday May 6th at the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. The iconic glitz and glamour that was paraded on the pink carpet by the most A-list celebrities. With Lady Gaga and her four dresses in one to Billy Porter who was carried in by gold trimmed shirtless men, wearing a jaw dropping golden catsuit: everyone was eager to show offer their extravagant costumes. Though all the stars looked like they were having the best time on the carpet, one specific one was having a rough time before the gala. Jennifer Lopez was very emotional during the preparation for the gala. The grammy winner was feeling emotional because of her close relationship with Luigi Massi, one of the designers at the fashion house who passed away last month at the age of 53 after a heart attack. Lopez’s dress was one of the last pieces he worked on. “Knowing Luigi was making this gown when he passed away. It’s difficult, but at the same time it’s also a celebration of his work,” said Lopez to Page Six Style. Her stunning silver beaded gown with a matching silver headpiece took approximately fifty days to complete and it took an additional seven hours for Lopez to look camera ready. Along with Lopez, Cardi B had also taken quite a bit of time to get ready for the big event. Sources say that her down dress took thirty-five people and about 1,000 hours to make the beautiful, jaw dropping, blood red dress. Another noteworthy star was Zendaya. Showing off her Cinderella inspired dress that actually lit up on the carpet. But she did get some backlash from Lindsay Lohan. Lohan commented on an Instagram post, saying that Claire Danes had already done the Cinderella look at the Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology event in 2016. Zendaya has yet to comment on the situation. No matter who you are, you have to admit that the Met Gala is the place to be to see stunning people wearing even more stunning clothing. BY MARCUS EMMEL Coachella 2019 included an (almost) reunion of NSYNC, a delayed Billie Eilish performance and, yes, even a herpes outbreak. The headliners included Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande along with Solange Knowles, Billie Eilish, Khalid and others. The teen phenom, Billie Eilish, had an impressive stage set that was bound to create some technical difficulties, and delayed her performance by half an hour. She also forgot the lyrics to one of her own songs, but saved it by prompting the audience to cover the song for her. She also invited Vince Staples onstage to sing her song "&burn" that they collaborated on, only to see him struggle with a microphone that wasn't switched on. Of course, all of this was forgotten because Eilish blew the audience away with the rest of her show being a hit and then some. Ariana Grande brought back four of the five members of NSYNC, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lances Bass, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone. After Grande sampled NSYNC on her song "break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored,", it seemed only fair that four-fifths of the boy band should reappear and make their very first Coachella appearance during Grande's set. Thousands of screaming fans met the group when they brought back their 1997 song, "Tearin' Up My Heart," along with their highly-choreographed dance moves. Grande joined the group to take on Timberlake's verses of the songs and whipping her long ponytail like a boss. She also brought on Nicki Minaj, P. Diddy and Mase, who paid homage to deceased rappers, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Mac Miller, and most recently Nipsey Hussle, with a performance of "Mo Money Mo Problems." The weekend really belonged to the one, the only, Lizzo. She was breathtaking. In a silver cape, Lizzo secured the best crowd participation of the whole festival, obviously. A human beacon of positivity and love, she also treated the crowd to a new song, a quick rendition of TLC's "No Scrubs". Her popular songs, "Juice", "Phone", and "Truth Hurts", pumped up the crowd and earned her the best headlining act Kacey Musgraves, the country pop queen, played a flawless set backed by incredible musicians for her first Coachella performance. Musgraves isn't all country rainbows though. Her call-and-response attempt with her crowd, with her calling out "When I say 'yee,' you say 'haw,'", the crowd happily did it, twice. But then they were eager to do it a third time - without the call. "I didn't say f---ing 'yee!'" Musgraves exclaimed. She shared the moment on Saturday afternoon to her Twitter fans, much to their amusement.
Coachella 2019 had many highs, a few lows, but was overall a success. We look forward to 2020's Coachella, but for now we have the many memories of this year's Coachella to keep us busy until then. By Laurel PrestonFrom big names like Billie Eilish to Tame Impala, you could definitely say Coachella was a success this year. The festival has been going on for about nineteen years now and there is no chance it is slowing down now.
